The Acoustic DESIGN of the DIDGERIDOO, by Andrea Ferroni

If you’ve landed on this page, let me guess… you’ve either tried making didgeridoos or are about to start, and you have plenty of doubts. “Which material should I choose?” or perhaps, “What shape should I draw?”, “Should I make a wider or narrower didgeridoo?”, “Is it worth widening certain areas to enhance the sound?”, “I have a thousand doubts, what if I mess it all up?”

Or perhaps you’re an experienced builder who is already familiar with many of these aspects, but doubts linger. Maybe you wish to craft better didgeridoos for yourself or your clients, to feel more confident in accepting commissions, and to satisfy your own enjoyment of playing or your client’s desires. Here, you’ll find definitive answers, reducing errors and attempts, ultimately saving… and even enhancing the value of your instruments!

Don’t miss out on the chance to join the most comprehensive workshop on contemporary didgeridoo crafting!

An example of what you can do at the end of this workshop

Online lessons dates: 7th and 9th May 2024
3 hours each evening from 7 pm to 10 pm

The program is divided into 2 evenings of distance learning.

This workshop is designed to train a select group of highly motivated individuals to independently pursue the design of didgeridoos, either independently or with the support of the Arti e Tradizioni association. Upon registration, each participant will gain access to a study group where they can engage with other trained individuals or those currently undergoing training.

After completing the course, participants will receive personalized guidance tailored to their individual needs. They will have the option to receive information on crafting their own didgeridoo at our facility, or they can opt for a custom design crafted by Andrea Ferroni. Additionally, participants may choose to enter an agreement to craft their didgeridoo in collaboration with us at our facility.

Main themes:
Main themes:
– Basic and specific acoustics for resonators,
– Psychoacoustics,
– Tonal and playability potential of the didgeridoo,
– Design of a specific stamp and note,

Don’t forget! At the conclusion of this workshop, you’ll have the opportunity to enroll in additional courses tailored specifically to didgeridoo design, such as:
– CAD-CAM design, CNC machining

YOU WON’T BE ALONE!

The following video covers the entire program, listening time 45 minutes.
The timeline is segmented into chapters for easy navigation.

The complete program will be scheduled  as follows:
Tuesday 7th of May 2024 from 7 to 10 pm (online lesson)
Acoustics topics:

Acoustics topics:

  • Sound, Harmonics, Inharmonics, Chords, and Beats: Exploring sound fundamentals, including harmonics, inharmonics, chord structures, and rhythmic beats.
  • Quality Sound: Understanding sound spectrum and the significance of harmonics in sound quality.
  • Acoustics of Resonating Pipes: Investigating standing wave physics in resonating pipes, covering fundamental and upper resonances, natural harmonics, and their interaction.
  • Techniques for tuning the basic drone and upper resonances using 1D acoustic simulation software.

Psychoacoustic Topics:

  • The Role of Harmonics and Inharmonics: Analyzing how harmonics and inharmonics shape the entire sound spectrum and how to manipulate sound spectra for specific qualities: smooth, clear, brilliant, warm, cold, rough, aggressive, etc.
  • Human Perception of Sound: Exploring the psychological aspects of sound perception, including its association with mood and physical or tactile sensations, and understanding sound dynamics.

Thursday 9th May from 7 to 10 pm (online lesson)
Didgeridoo design – theoretical part:
How to leverage the preceding topics in designing our didgeridoo, considering:

  • The desired sound quality and tone color.
  • The intended playing techniques. This section is crucial for comprehending the potential and constraints of a given shape. By the end of this segment, each participant will be equipped to draft a shape that embodies their preferred sound profile and the associated didgeridoo capabilities, provided they align physically. Alternatively, participants will gain insight into why a single didgeridoo may not fulfill all expectations. Every participant will receive guidance in designing and tuning at least the basic drone and first toot based on specific sound characteristics. Having a personal laptop can greatly facilitate autonomous work.

Participants in this event can benefit from our workshop and support. Andrea Ferroni will be available to address students’ expectations, review projects, and assist in the construction of their own didgeridoo. Alternatively, for those unable to attend in person, Andrea can craft a didgeridoo based on their specifications.

Are you intrigued by the art of crafting didgeridoos but find yourself overwhelmed with questions? Whether you’re a novice or an experienced builder, our workshop offers answers to your inquiries and provides a platform to enhance your skills and confidence.

For beginners, we address common concerns such as material selection, shape design, and sound optimization. Experienced builders can refine their techniques and explore advanced concepts to elevate their craftsmanship. Through personalized guidance and hands-on support, participants can create bespoke didgeridoos tailored to their preferences.

Our comprehensive program covers essential topics including acoustics, psychoacoustics, and didgeridoo design. We delve into the science behind sound resonance, harmonic manipulation, and the psychological impact of music. Participants also have the opportunity to enroll in specialized courses, such as CAD-CAM design and CNC machining, to further expand their knowledge.

Join us for an enriching journey into the world of didgeridoo crafting. Whether you’re seeking to hone your skills or embark on a new passion, our workshop provides the tools and guidance you need to succeed.

    1. tolgo solo quelle raggiungibili, dalla campana o dall’imboccatura.
In mezzo è possibile con uno straccio e un’asta.
Ma dato che lo scarso spessore della colla essiccata non crea influenze sul suono, non ci sono problemi.
La colla è anche resistente all’acqua
